Last month, I was going through some insecurities about my art. Being an artist who creates more surreal and fantasy art than anything else, I’m anxious about people looking at my work and making assumptions about me. Maybe some onlookers whispering to themselves asking, “What type of drugs is she on?” or “Why does it all look so weird?” Making the decision to sell your work, post it on social media, or exhibit it in public opens you up to criticisms and observations like this as an artist. Those insecurities might begin to creep in as your art reaches a larger audience. How can we conquer these fears? Here’s something that I’ve learned to fight against these feelings.
Insecurity is a strong negative emotion that many of us face not just in the art world but in what we do every day. However, the best way to beat negativity is with positivity! As an artist, what I do brings me so much joy and happiness! I love crafting worlds that are unusual and out of the ordinary; imagining alien planets and fantastical landscapes scratch my creative itch! I try to bring to life creatures that are so odd or cute that you can’t help but want to learn more about them. I want people to be intrigued by my art and invest in the world I create! The other night, my partner helped me to put a positive perspective on the people who might make bold comments such as, “Do you do drugs?” and “How do you come up with this stuff?” To them, they can’t imagine something like this and wonder just how someone could come up with such ideas without some sort of… Performance enhancer? Their comments might sometimes come off as a bit rude or misinformed at first, but really their confusion is actually showing an appreciation for my creativity!
Art is always open to interpretation, people who see your work might not always “Get it.” But, let their bewilderment lift you up instead of putting you down! Great art makes people think, it makes people talk, and it captures their attention. No matter what comments an audience makes, whether it’s critiques or criticisms, they’re taking the time to engage with your art and that’s what makes what you do so special. Be mysterious, be different, be eccentric, always just be yourself!
Thank you artsy peeps for stopping by and, as always, take what I say with a pinch of salt and little pinch of sugar. I’ll see you next time, take care!
