Going to art markets is something I always look forward to. It’s always the highlight of any day! Not only do I visualize having my own booth some day in one of these trending occurrences, but I also enjoy seeing the other artists concepts coming to life in their own style. An idea that once started out as a creative idea imbedded in the brain, it has now become a physical item for others to observe and enjoy. It truly is amazing to see! Every time I would describe an idea for an art piece, most people would just listen not really see or understand the whole picture. It’s not until they see the final piece when they can say, “Oh I get it now! It’s just like how you described it.” But, my work is usually more on the fantasy and surreal side, so I get that not everyone might get it at first. Artist are truly some of the bravest people ever, pouring the hearts out into their work for the world to judge… That takes guts! I still feel anxious about showing my art in public, I hope I get more positivity surrounding my work than anything else. But, no matter what, I enjoy what I do and feel so inspired going to these markets! It helps me to keep moving forward and not give up on my dreams. There will always be one sour apple on a tree full of juicy ones!
But how does an artist actually create a beautiful land scape or a surreal scene that is completely out of this world? Two words, imagination and bravery. But how do you get there, you may ask. I did release a video back in February called, “Uninspired To Inspired” where I go more into depth on the subject, so I wont go into too much about inspiration here. But would recommend watching it if you have being feeling uninspired! Everything starts with an idea, some choose to ignore it but some choose to create with it. It doesn’t even have to be surreal or fantasy ( like my style) it could be as simple as creating a gorgeous sunset at the beach or a farm land that looks like it could go on into infinity. Or perhaps a new medium you’ve always wanted to dabble in. No matter the challenge, the first step is always learning. Learn the materials, techniques, lighting, shading, shapes, and also what brings you happiness. But what if you want to make fantasy, surreal, or have your own signature style? Well I’m here to tell you that you can! From my own experience, this is how I am able to create from imagination.
What inspires me most is daydreaming in my spare time. Of course I’m never daydreaming about important tasks at hand like work but when it’s just me and my own free time, I find myself daydreaming to things like music. I create scenes or imagery in my head, like I’m storyboarding a music video. Food can also be inspiring! Maybe it’s so beautifully presented that I can’t help but think of painting ideas inspired by it or maybe little miniature characters eating it. But perhaps the most inspiring of all are life experiences and traveling, being places where the colors are so radiant or luscious that it makes me eager to paint! You’ve got to live in that fun childlike mindset and be brave enough to create without judgement of others. As an artist you do this for yourself, your high self, source, or what some people might call God. In doing so, you will find your style. I was lucky to find my style very early on. I was in my senior year of high school when I made a surreal beach landscape with a coconut wooden house and coconut trees that looked like birds. I had so much fun making it that I made a promise in my heart right then to keep that whimsical style ever since. That’s what it all comes down to! Creating from happiness and joy! Not from a place of “could this make me successful” but from a place of wanting to challenge yourself and see where those challenges take you. More often then not, I’m sure you’ll surprise yourself on where your inspiration takes you!
For next months topic, I might go more into details about the fear of being judged about your art because this is the fear that I’m currently facing at the moment.
