Hello Artsy Peeps! And welcome to the March blog! Click Here For Vlog version if you choose to watch instead. Last Month( February Blog) I talk about being uninspired which you can Read Here Or Watch Here for the vlog version. For today, we are talking about the opposite. Having too many ideas! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the article!

Have you ever had so many ideas that you start one project and then you get excited about another project so you abandon the first one?? First and for most that’s great that you have many ideas!! You have those creative juices flowing! You feel on top of the world with that natural art high. You get started on a painting or project and then, Uh Oh, another creative idea popped into my head. Let do that one now! You might work on that for the rest of the day and completely forget about the first project you started on. Ehh you got bored with it anyway and moved on. The next day comes and guess what? I have another idea lets do that. Eventually this can turn into a vicious cycle.

Once again, please take everything that I say with a grain of salt. These are just helpful tips that’s may or may not work for you. Please seek profession help if you are going through anxiety, depression, unhealthy thoughts, etc. So Here we go!

Some artists do actual work on multiple projects but are able to finish what they started. Most of these artists have long term goals already set in stone for them. They might be doing a solo show or simply filling up inventory for the upcoming holidays. If you are serious about finishing project set a strong goal or foundation for yourself. If you are just doing this as a hobby, that is totally fine. But make yourself proud even if this is just a hobby. Think about how good it will feel when finished. Even if you are doing it for fun. It’s like that feeling after you finished cleaning your room or just organized something. You feel a sense of accomplishment or a weight off your shoulders. Think of it as a check list off your to do list. Try working on multiple project at a time. Maybe just start with two. Three being the max and see how that works for you. Finish those before started something new. If a new idea comes up while you’re currently already working on another project or two, just quickly jot down your thoughts and a quick sketch to get your idea down. This helps with the idea dopamine rush (or what I like to call it). That way if you need to take a 30 minutes break and these ideas are just dying to come out, quickly sketch and write all the details down. After That 30 mins. has ended, get back to you original projects. At least you have it down in an art notebook.

Keeping an art notebook is a complete life saver. When work was consuming my life, I wrote down and did quick sketches of everything so that I wouldn’t forget these ideas! These sketches absolutely do not have to be perfect. Most of my drawings look so disformed and total scribbles but it’s just for you and for you to get all of your thoughts, details, and images down. Basically art vomit

If you are still having a hard time finishing project, now is the time to ask yourself some serious questions about your art journey.

  1. Is there other events or things happening in my life that are preventing me from finishing a project? And is this something that is in my control?
  2. Am I just trying to figure it all out at once?
  3. Is my current job overwhelming me right now or other things are overwhelming me that are preventing progress?
  4. Do I feel tired halfway through my projects? Are you not getting enough sleep? Or too much sleep?
  5. What do I need to do to finish what I’ve started?
  6. Do I need to say no to certain things or habits to finish?
  7. Does doing this project make me happy to do or not and why?
  8. wrong influences in your life? Friends or family not being supportive?
  9. Am I being called to do something else?
  10. Are my priorities in other places right now? Family, Bills, Job, Etc.?

If I hit the nail on the head for any of these questions, my suggestion is to just take it step by step. Keep moving forward in your art journey. Going back to the art journal again. I seriously can not stress the power of having one. If it helps to write these questions down in your journal, do so! I just want to see everyone fulfilled and doing what they love. I understand finances or personal situations can get in the way but just taking baby steps can lead to big successes my friends. As I always say, Rome was not build in a day!
