One Simple Trick🤫To Improving Your Painting Or Drawing Skills Quicker When You Feel Like It Has Become Stagnant// Has Helped Me

Hey Everyone, Welcome Back Artsy Peeps To My YouTube Channel!! Today, I will be sharing with you one little trick that helped me in improving my art. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

For years I have been an acrylic artist. Starting out it felt good, fresh and was my go to medium. However, over the coarse of time, acrylic painting felt more like a chore that needed to be done by a certain time and not a peaceful, meditative, puzzle solving game. I wanted to improve my painting and become a better artist but felt stagnant, unsatisfied, and felt like my paintings didn’t have that extra oof that I was look for. It just wasn’t growing like I wanted it too. I felt ok with it, but not to the point to where I was proud of the piece I just created.

I decided to take a break from acrylic and try a new medium. I tried a little bit of color pencil and did charcoal as well. This was fun and I truly enjoyed it but still felt like it just wasn’t really going anywhere mentally for me. Hopping on the social media platform(like most people do in this day an age) checking out trending artists and seeing what their art is all about, I noticed one thing that stood out to me. What I found was that most of them where all digital artists. This was definitely a medium I have always wanted to try. Never taking action in it thinking I had to buy tons of equipment. But after doing some homework, I found a cheap yet effective way to make digital art. Just buying a simple tablet that hooks up to your computer and just downloading the free art program that comes with it for under 100 dollars. I was extremely excited.

This excitement definitely got me thrilled about art again. My first couple of pieces where not to bad. But not to the extent of extreme details and boldness. The first couple of weeks even months were me basically learning the program itself. Watching videos of setting up the tablet, choosing which would be the undo button, and heck how to even holding the pen against the tablet properly haha. Over the course from the summer of 2018 to now May 2020, my love for digital art expanded quickly learning the skills. During this time, learning digital art actually helped me to think of fresher, newer ideas for my acrylic art again. I was actually looking forward to trying acrylic art again. Yes trying a new medium did bring excitement back into art for me again however, what I notice with digital was this one thing.

With digital it’s a little bit easier to fix and learn mistakes quicker during an art projects then painting. With painting, I felt like I had to be a little bit more careful. If I tried a certain technique or risk with painting, there’s that possibility of having to start all over again. Maybe even Re-fixing it back to normal and trying again. Or creating a totally different look or texture to it.Ā  Sometimes you get lucky and those happy accidental moments actually turned out better then you thought. But with digital art, it’s easier to learn your mistakes quicker during your art project because the undo button is right at the tips of your figures which takes seconds to delete v.s. painting which takes longer to fix the colors, perspective, the figure of the body or that tree that looks like it’s melting or something weird like that haha. I was able to learn my mistakes quicker within a little over a year of digital so that when I went back into acrylic, I knew that this technique would not work or trying this would result in that. Making for happier painting days, growth, and excitement to come back to try new things. Digital taught me new techniques to bring to my paintings. Extra color here does this or bringing light here does that. Learning perspectives, angles, colors faster during an art project and not having a big hassle spending hours fixing something, getting frustrated, and not enjoying the process.

The choice honestly is yours and everyone is different. Personally with digital art, I was able to learn quicker techniques to bring to my paintings VS learning without digital and doing it the old school way of learning. If you choose to learn from hands on and not digital, just try using different techniques without making a piece of art for awhile. Do a session of just different textures, forms, shading, and colors. This is something you learn in beginner courses for art school.

Digital helped me feel a lot more confident with my paintings and being a lot happier with the end results. Not only does changing your usual medium get you excited about art again, you just might learn a few new techniques and tricks for when and if you ever go back to your usual medium. Thank you guys so much for stopping by and I’ll see you next time!!
