Hey Artists and creator out there! For the past couple of weeks, I have been molding and trying to create a character out of my logo. The reason behind it? You will see very soon but will not spoil it now. I’m extremely excited and can’t wait until the mask comes out right.
So my first attempt, I wanted to make a prosthetic trying liquid latex. I went ahead and made a live cast of my face. I did this a couple months ahead before sculpting my pie logo skull with earth clay(does not dry out to air). I molded a couple different looks. My goal was to not make it look like a realistic skull(even though I could) but more so like my cartoon logo or something like it.
I tried to make a surreal skull nose but was not liking it much. I probably did like 8 different skull noses before deciding to make it look like my logo skull nose as much as possible. Just experimenting is all. After finally molding it the way I liked it, I started to stumble on the liquid latex with a sponge brush(or whatever its called). I probably did about 10 layers of this stuff. Slowly pulling it with a little bit of powder, the latex mask of off.
The prep time to put the mask on, makeup, and hair was about 30 mins. I thought the latex would come out as detailed as the clay and catch all those details but it didn’t. I thought about turning it inside out since it was smoother on the back but still did not really capture all the details I wanted. I could try a second time to smooth the liquid latex as much as possible but I want it thick and you would still not be able to see the details. The only reason I added many layers was because I wanted people to see the skull not necessarily have it blend with my skin. Most prosthetic masks usually are thin around the edges so you don’t see the lines and it looks real. But for this I’m not going for that look. My plan is to take less than 10 mins to put the mask on included hair. What I do like about it is that there are no strings attached to it so I don’t have to worry about the string breaking. I can also move my face and gives the skull expressions V.S. a masquerade mask.
It would be nice to create a mask where all the colors and details are already set so I don’t have to keep adding makeup to the prosthetic. All I have to do is adhere it to my face. Just do the hair and done. Saves me money and not having to continue buying makeup and easy prep time.
My next attempt is gelatin or silicone. I hope the details come out better especially the teeth and nose. That’s where the latex failed. Not able to capture the details that I spend hours molding. Anyway I still have the mold on my live cast but just going to try different materials. Was very close but not quite there yet.
